Discussion:
CD/radio head unit problems - suggestions on how to diagnose?

The Visteon CD/radio unit in my 2002 FIAT Stilo failed to turn on with
the car the other day, and has resolutely failed to do so since. No
lights come on, and there's no other sign of life from it.

The appropriate fuse in the fuse panel is OK, as is the fuse on the back
of the unit.

I checked the power reaching it from the cable loom. There are four
connectors, which deliver, apart from the 0V, approximately 0.2, 11.5,
and 12.5V.

When the ignition is turned on, the 0.2 and 11.5V become around 0.5 and
5V respectively - the 5V line stays at 5V for a couple of minutes after
the ignition is turned off, before returning to 11.5V

Is all this normal?

The part number is Visteon 2FCF-18C838-BE, or FIAT 735296997.

I've dismantled the unit but I can't see any obvious signs of failure on
the main board, but I suspect that's where the fault lies.

I'd be most grateful for any help.

I'm fairly sure that Fiat use CAN BUS control instead of an ignition
feed on this unit, so the above is probably indicative that everything
is OK. Unfortunately though, there's no simple way to confirm that the
signals are OK if they are using CAN control. You may well have to
take the car to Fiat for diagnosis.

The manual for the unit does indeed show that there are two CAN pins.

I've tried the unit connected to another car: it doesn't power up. The
stereo from the other (older) car works OK in the FIAT (so long as I
take the 12V battery line to the 12V ignition pin, because the FIAT
doesn't supply the latter).

I'm presuming (hoping) that it's the stereo that's dead, rather than the
car!

I think the unit's dead.

I bought a cassette/radio from eBay for about £5 + £12 postage. It works
perfectly, and since I have a Dension iPod connector anyway, in fact
more than preventing us from listening to CDs in the car it has allowed
us to listen to cassettes we haven't heard for years (I did however have
to draw the line at Ted Hughes reading his own poetry the other day,
which I thought was a bit much, even for driving through Devon).
