I have a Mk2 GTi. The plan for this car is to keep it original-looking
as possible, whilst getting some semblance of decent sound. I couldn't
live with the system as it was when I bought the car.
Speaker-wise, there were some 6x9 Pioneers appalingly fitted to the
butchered shelf. I got a new, clean shelf from ebay, as I couldn't take
the tackiness.
In the front, there are some Clarions. I think they're components with
a capacitor as a crossover. The tweeters are in the 3.5" slots in the
dash, and the 5.25" mids are in the door pockets. They sound dire. The
mids in the door pockets vibrate, and I think one is blown. I don't
really want to mount anything in the door pockets - I might try and get
hold of the original storage pockets - much more useful.
So, for the front, I'm going to mount some 2-way 3.5" speakers in the dash.
The rear is more difficult. The stock locations are 6x4". I know I can
get replacements for this size, but am concerned that they would provide
little or no improvement over the fronts alone. Is this the case? I
don't want to cut my new shelf for 6x9"s, stealth or not. It's a pain
when I open the boot.
This leaves me with the idea of a sub. I've never had a sub before, but
it seems that it's not a bad plan. Obviously it's not that
original-looking, but I'm thinking that the combination of 3.5" in the
dash and a sub in the boot could be the best balance between SQ and
originality.
Will it be a waste to drive the 3.5" from the head unit (2x24w RMS)?
Are there amps that will let me drive those, and a sub, in one box?
There was a Clarion head unit and CD changer, which I took out as the
head unit display didn't work. I have purchased a Blaupunkt Dusseldorf
RCR84 from ebay, for the retro, understated look. No CD, but I'm not
bothered (see below). The install guide says not to use the ISO
connectors in the car, but they seem to work fine. Very confused.
It seems from the head unit install guide, that there is an adaptor
cable available for a preamp. This could be perfect if the cable is
still available (the head unit is fairly old).
Most of my listening these days is with an iRiver H340 MP3 player. I
can use a cassette adaptor, but was wondering if there are any smarter
options to fitting this into the system.
I'd appreciate any ideas at all about this as I'm very confused.
